Transcribing English Dialects and Accents |
The following archives document different dialects and accents in the English language used across the United States and the world. These archives allow you to listen to different speakers from different language backgrounds; they also document the biographical data of each speaker:
- Speech Accent Archive
- IDEA International Dialects of English Archive
Choose two different speakers from one of the archives and listen to the excerpts. Then, using one of the following IPA keyboards, transcribe the first three sentences from each speaker as you hear them:
(Note: The Speech Accent Archive includes the phonetic transcription for each speaker. It is recommended that you complete your own transcription first, before looking at the transcriptions on the website. Then, compare your transcriptions to those in the archive).
Copy/paste your transcription from the IPA keyboard into your discussion posting. Then, discuss the speech patterns that you heard and your experience of transcribing each selection. Can you make generalizations about regional speech patterns?
Your initial post should be at least 500 words in length. Support your claims with examples from required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references.
