American Imperialism

For this short written assignment,
you will be reading two short primary sources from the Age of American
Imperialism. This period, where the United States actively sought to
expand beyond its continental borders, presented an ideological
challenge; how to reconcile American democracy with imperialist
expansion. These two short primary sources present several arguments
utilized to justify America’s expansionistic policies.

For your assignment, I want you to read these short pieces and then
identify at least TWO arguments they present to justify American
expansion. Then, I want you to briefly assess whether or not you think
that these arguments can be reconciled with American democracy. You
will answer these two parts in a 1-2 page, double-spaced written
response.
