Craft of Writing: Avoiding Run-On Sentences and Comma Splices

I’m working on a english multi-part question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.

There are two types of run-on sentences that create problems in writing:

  1. FUSED sentences:
    • this is when two complete sentences run together with no punctuation
    • example: “John went to the store he bought chocolate cookies.”
  2. COMMA SPLICE sentences:
    • this is when two independent clauses that could be their own sentences are incorrectly joined by a comma
    • example: “John went to the store, he bought chocolate cookies.”

Both of these are incorrect. Please read “Avoiding Run-On Sentences, Comma Splices, and Sentence Fragments” .

On Page 5, find and complete the practice exercises. You can type the corrected sentences onto a document to upload to this assignment or type them directly into the dialogue box on this page. You don’t need to type the incorrect version – just give me corrected sentences!
