In this reading reflection, engage with how historians and non-historians shaped the scholarship and perceptions of Indigenous Americans, their culture, and their history. Make sure to include the following points in your reflection (does not have to be in the order given). 500 words minimum.
1) Provide a definition of historiography that makes the most sense to you. Feel free to use one that I provide in the lecture, research a new another one, or come up with your own.
2) Provide an overview of the “ecological Indian” and “germs vs genocide” historigraphies. No need to mention every text/academic in each historiography, just provide a general summary and major turning points in the fields.
3) Bring the two historiographies together. Besides the fact that they are about indigenous Americans, can you find similarities in the two historiographies? What themes, actors, or perceptions can you find in the two?
4) Lastly, have you had any perceptions concerning indigenous Americans that present-day historians might deem “outdated” or “incorrect”?
