I the fire service, we have tests for hiring and promotion on a regular basis. In order to determine the validity of the tests, firefighters in the position take the test to determine if the test is too easy or too difficult. For a t test, one could have current employees take the hiring test. Then, when the potential new hires are tested, the scores of both groups could be compared and thereby show if there is a significant difference in the two groups.
