This week we have two readings. One is “Turmoil in Central America” by Kerry Dooley Young. The other is “Global Woman: Nannies, Maids, and Sex Workers in the New Economy” by Barbara Ehrenreich and Arlie Hochschild. You only need to write about one for your IR Roots paper. What does Dooley Young see as driving the turmoil in Central America? What kind of response should the US have to these forces and trends? What do Ehrenreich and Hochschild see as the forces pushing and pulling migrant women workers from developing countries to wealthier advanced industrial countries? What do you think about these trends and the forces driving them?
There are several key learning points in this chapter:
- Identify at least four basic human needs and describe how at least one region in the global South is meeting those needs.
- Give examples of states that world-systems theory would identify as members of the core, semiperiphery, and periphery.
- Compare three different effects of colonialism and explain how these effects have led to problems with economic development in the global South.
